The internet of things promised buildings full of sensors reporting everything. Some of that is genuinely valuable; much of it is dashboards nobody looks at. The discipline is knowing which measurements lead to a better decision or a saving.
Where IoT earns its place
- Occupancy sensing that drives cooling and cleaning
- Energy and water sub-metering that reveals waste
- Air-quality sensing that protects comfort and health
- Condition sensors that warn of equipment problems
- Leak and environmental sensors that prevent damage
The pitfalls to avoid
Sensors that feed no action, that cannot be maintained, or that sit on insecure networks create cost and risk without benefit. Every sensor should have an owner, a purpose and a place in the integrated system.
Secure by design
IoT devices are a known weak point if deployed carelessly. They belong on segmented networks, with changed credentials and managed firmware, as part of the building's overall security, not bolted on outside it.
