The term digital twin gets used loosely, but the idea is powerful: a virtual model of a building that is continuously fed with live data from its systems, so it reflects not just how the building was designed, but how it is actually behaving right now.
What makes it a twin
A static 3D model shows geometry. A digital twin connects that model to live data, temperatures, energy use, occupancy, equipment status, so you can see, in context, what is happening across the building and why.
What it enables
- A single, visual view of all building systems
- Testing changes virtually before making them
- Faster location and diagnosis of faults
- Better planning of maintenance and space use
- A shared reference for operators, owners and contractors
Start with the data
A twin is only as useful as the data flowing into it, which comes from integrated systems, good metering and reliable sensors. The model is the surface; integration is what makes it live.
Grow it over time
You do not need everything at once. Many buildings start with energy and key plant, prove the value, then extend the twin to more systems as the integration matures.
