Every building has a room, or should have, where the network core, servers and system controllers live. Get it right and everything runs reliably. Get it wrong and you face overheating, downtime and a space nobody can work in safely.
The fundamentals
- Dedicated, protected power with UPS and ideally a generator feed
- Cooling sized for the heat the equipment produces
- Proper racks, cable management and labelling
- Access control and CCTV on the room itself
- Fire detection suited to electronic equipment
- Environmental monitoring for temperature and humidity
Plan for growth and resilience
Leave rack space, power and cooling headroom for the next few years. For critical operations, consider dual power feeds, redundant cooling and a second location so a single failure does not stop the business.
It ties everything together
The comms room is where IT, CCTV, access control and building systems converge. Designing it as the heart of an integrated building, rather than an afterthought cupboard, is what keeps all those systems dependable.
