A PA system that can only address the entire building at once is a blunt instrument. Paging a driver should not interrupt a meeting on another floor, and in an emergency you often need to move one area while reassuring another. Zoning makes that possible.
What zoning does
Zoning divides the building into areas that can be addressed separately or together: car park, retail floors, back of house, each floor, each tenancy. Messages, music and alerts can then be targeted precisely.
Why it matters
- Routine paging without disturbing the whole building
- Different background music in different areas
- Phased evacuation, moving the right areas first
- Tenant-specific announcements in mixed-use buildings
Zoning and fire strategy
In a voice-alarm system, zoning supports phased evacuation agreed with the fire strategy, alerting the floors at risk first while preparing others. The zone plan is therefore a safety decision, not just a convenience, and is designed with the fire engineer.
