Network segmentation: why VLANs matter for security

Putting every system on one flat network is convenient and dangerous. Segmentation contains problems and protects what matters.

When everything shares one network, a problem anywhere can become a problem everywhere. A compromised device, a broadcast storm or a misbehaving system can affect unrelated services. Segmentation is how you draw boundaries inside your infrastructure.

What segmentation does

Virtual LANs (VLANs) divide one physical network into separate logical networks. Security cameras, building systems, guest Wi-Fi, voice and business data each get their own segment, with firewall rules controlling exactly what can pass between them.

The benefits

  • Contains breaches and faults to one segment
  • Keeps heavy CCTV traffic off business networks
  • Lets guest and IoT devices connect without risk to core systems
  • Simplifies compliance and monitoring
  • Supports a zero-trust approach

Shared cabling, separate networks

Segmentation does not mean duplicate cabling. One well-designed structured backbone carries all the segments, with separation handled logically. Designing it correctly from the start is far cheaper than re-architecting later.
