Barrier-free, free-flow parking: the frictionless car park

The newest car parks remove barriers entirely. Drivers simply arrive, park and leave, with everything handled automatically.

The logical end point of ticketless parking is to remove the barriers too. In a free-flow car park, cameras read every plate on entry and exit, and payment happens automatically or online, so drivers never stop at a barrier at all.

How free-flow works

ANPR cameras record entry and exit. Registered users are billed automatically to an account or saved payment method; visitors pay online, at a machine, or within a grace period after leaving. No barriers means no queues and no bottlenecks.

The benefits

  • No queuing at entry or exit, even at peak times
  • Higher throughput from the same lanes
  • Less equipment to maintain, with no barriers to break
  • A premium, seamless experience for drivers

What it depends on

Free-flow relies on very high plate-recognition accuracy and robust payment and enforcement processes, so unpaid exits are captured and pursued fairly. It suits the right sites well, and the design has to be matched carefully to how a particular car park is used.
