Designing a car park that works on day one

Many parking problems are designed in before the first car arrives. Getting the fundamentals right avoids years of frustration.

A great deal of a car park's success is decided at the design stage, long before equipment is installed. Lane layout, signage, lighting and the flow of traffic shape the experience as much as the technology, and they are expensive to change once built.

The fundamentals

  • Enough entry and exit lanes for peak demand
  • Clear circulation and signage so drivers never hesitate
  • Good lighting for safety, ANPR and CCTV
  • Sensible bay sizes and accessible provision
  • Power and cabling routes for current and future systems

Design for the peak, not the average

A car park that copes with an average Tuesday but gridlocks on a busy weekend has been sized wrong. Designing lanes, payment and flow around realistic peaks is what prevents queues from reaching the road outside.

Technology follows design

ANPR, guidance, payment and security all work better when the physical design supports them: cameras positioned for clean plate reads, displays where decisions are made, and infrastructure ready for what comes next. Design and technology planned together is what makes a car park work from day one.
