Cybersecurity essentials every building network needs

Buildings are now full of connected devices, each a potential way in. The fundamentals that keep a mixed IT and OT network safe.

A modern building runs IT systems alongside operational technology: CCTV, access control, lifts, HVAC, parking and AV. Many of these were never designed with security in mind, yet they sit on the same network as sensitive business data.

The expanded attack surface

Every connected camera, controller, sensor and screen is a device that can be attacked or used as a stepping stone. Default passwords, outdated firmware and flat networks are the three mistakes that cause most incidents.

The essentials

  • Change default credentials on every device, without exception
  • Keep firmware and software patched on a schedule
  • Segment IT and OT with VLANs and firewall rules
  • Control and log who can reach sensitive systems
  • Back up configurations and test recovery
  • Monitor for unusual traffic and behaviour

Security is a process

There is no product you can buy that makes a building secure once and for all. It is an ongoing discipline of patching, monitoring, reviewing access and responding to alerts, built into how the systems are run.

Design it in

Retrofitting security is expensive and incomplete. The strongest position is to design security into the network and every system from the start, which is far easier when one team is accountable for all of it.
