Detecting drones: the first step in counter-UAS

You cannot manage a threat you cannot see. Detecting drones, reliably and early, is the foundation of any response.

Every response to the drone threat begins with the same requirement: knowing a drone is there. Detection, reliable and early, is the foundation on which everything else rests. Without it, a site is simply unaware of what is in its airspace.

Why detection is challenging

Small drones are, by nature, hard to detect. They are small, can fly low and slow, and are easily confused with birds or missed entirely. Reliable detection, with few false alarms, is a genuine technical challenge and the area where counter-UAS capability is most tested.

A layered approach to awareness

  • Combining complementary detection methods for reliability
  • Early detection to maximise the time to assess and respond
  • Accurate assessment to distinguish real threats from false alarms
  • Integration into the wider security picture

Detection before response

Only once a drone is reliably detected and assessed can any appropriate, lawful response be considered. Getting detection right is therefore the essential first step, and the one that determines how effective the whole capability can be.
