The role of analytics in large-scale surveillance

When there are more cameras than anyone can watch, analytics are what make surveillance effective rather than merely extensive.

A large surveillance deployment quickly outgrows human attention. Dozens or hundreds of feeds cannot be meaningfully watched live, and reviewing recordings after the fact is slow. Analytics are what turn that volume from a burden into an asset.

What analytics contribute

  • Flagging events of interest for human attention
  • Making footage searchable instead of only reviewable
  • Reducing false alarms so real alerts are trusted
  • Providing counts, flows and patterns across a site

Focusing human judgement

The point of analytics is not to remove people but to direct them. By surfacing the few moments that matter from hours of ordinary footage, they let skilled operators apply judgement where it counts rather than watching uneventful screens.

Governed and accurate

Analytics must be accurate and used within clear policies. A system that flags the wrong things, or is used beyond its agreed purpose, undermines both effectiveness and trust, which is why governance is designed in alongside the technology.
